America has always been a powerhouse in tennis. From the “Big Three” of Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Jim Courier to Serena and Venus Williams, American players have always been at the forefront of the sport. In this blog, we will be counting down the top 10 tennis players in America. This list will include both men and women who have made a significant impact on the sport. Serena Williams

Serena Williams is one of the top tennis players in America. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, more than any other player in the Open Era, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, four Olympic gold medals, and is the only player to have won all four Grand Slams in a single year. In addition, she has held the world’s No. 1 ranking in singles on eight occasions.

Venus Williams

Venus Williams is one of the most successful tennis players in America. She has won seven Grand Slam singles titles and four Olympic gold medals, including one in singles.

Madison Keys

Madison Keys is an American professional tennis player. She has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 7, achieved in October 2016, and is currently ranked at No. 13 in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). She has won two WTA Premier Mandatory tournaments, the 2017 China Open and the 2018 Miami Open. Keys has also reached three Grand Slam semifinals: at the 2015 US Open, 2017 French Open, and 2018 Wimbledon Championships.

Keys, born on February 17, 1995, in Rock Island, Illinois, started playing tennis when she was five years old and quickly began to stand out as a prodigy on the local and national junior tennis circuits. In 2009, at the age of 14, she moved to Boca Raton, Florida to train full-time at the Evert Tennis Academy. The following year she turned professional and made her Grand Slam debut at the 2010 US Open.

Keys had a breakout year in 2015, reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open before ultimately losing to Serena Williams in straight sets. The resulted in her getting into the Top 20 of the WTA rankings for the first time in her career. She followed up her strong showing at Flushing Meadows with another semifinal appearance at Wimbledon in 2016, this time losing to eventual champion Angelique Kerber. After a disappointing start to 2017, Keys regained form by winning her first Premier Mandatory title at the China Open in Beijing.

Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens is an American professional tennis player. She has won 10 singles titles on the WTA Tour, including her first Premier Mandatory title at the Miami Open in 2017. Stephens was also the runner-up at the 2017 US Open. As a result of her successful year, in October 2017, Stephens reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 3.

Stephens began her 2018 season at the Hopman Cup, where she partnered with Jack Sock to help the United States win the mixed doubles event. She then reached to the semifinals of the Australian Open, losing to eventual champion Caroline Wozniacki in three sets. At Indian Wells, Stephens successfully defended her title by defeating Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in the final. This win saw Stephens return to the top 10 of the WTA rankings for the first time since August 2016.

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff, a 15-year-old American tennis player who is currently ranked No. 67 in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA),  has won two singles titles on the WTA Tour, as well as one doubles title. Gauff made her Grand Slam debut at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, where she reached the fourth round, defeating Venus Williams in the first round. She also became the youngest player to qualify for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament since 2005.

John Isner

John Isner is an American professional tennis player who is currently ranked No. 18 in the world by the ATP. He is best known for his victory over Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon in 2010, which was the longest tennis match in history.

Isner, born on April 26, 1985, in Greensboro, North Carolina, began playing tennis at age seven and quickly developed into a top junior player. In the 2003 French Open, he won the boys’ singles title and turned pro later that year.

Taylor Fritz is an American professional tennis player. His career-high ATP singles ranking is No. 29, which he achieved on March 11, 2019. He has won two Challenger titles and reached the semifinals of the 2017 Memphis Open.

Fritz was born in Rancho Santa Fe, California, to Guy Fritz, a former touring pro, and Kathy Fritz. He has two older sisters, Olivia and Janet. Fritz attended Torrey Pines High School before turning professional in 2015.

Fritz made his ATP main draw debut at the 2016 BNP Paribas Open, where he received a wildcard into the doubles event with fellow American Jared Donaldson. They lost their first-round match to ŁukaszKubot and Marcelo Melo. The following week, Fritz qualified for his first ATP main draw singles event at the Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Open defeating James Duckworth and Ernesto Escobedo en route to the qualifying draw final where he lost to world No. 85 Guido Pella. As a result of his performance in Newport, Fritz’s ranking rose to world No. 138.[1][2] Two weeks later, Fritz competed in his second ATP main draw singles event at the BB&T Atlanta Open as a qualifier where he defeated Steve Johnson in the first round before losing to second seed John Isner in the second round.[3]

Reilly Opelka

Reilly Opelka is an American professional tennis player. He has a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 31, achieved on October 7, 2019. Opelka won his first ATP title at the 2019 New York Open.

Opelka was born in Palm Coast, Florida, to parents Reilly and Bridget Opelka. His father played college basketball at the University of Detroit Mercy. Growing up, Opelka played various sports including tennis, football, and basketball. He began playing tennis at age eight and started competing nationally at age eleven. In 2013, he won thejunior Wimbledon Championships boys’ singles title defeating Stefan Kozlov in the final.

In 2016, Opelka made his ATP main draw debut as a wildcard at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships where he was defeated in the first round by Jared Donaldson. The following year, he received a wildcard into the Newport Beach Challenger but lost in qualifying. In 2018, he made his Grand Slam debut after receiving a wildcard into the US Open men’s singles event where he was defeated in the first round by Lucas Pouille in straight sets.

In 2019, Opelka won his maiden ATP title at the New York Open defeating John Isner in straight sets in the final. With this victory, he also achieved a new career-high singles ranking of World No. 32.

Sam Querrey

Samuel Querrey is an American professional tennis player. He has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 11 and doubles ranking of world No. 48, achieved in March 2012. His best result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the semifinals of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships.

Querrey has won thirteen ATP Tour singles titles and reached the final of the 2018 Indian Wells Masters, one of the Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP Tour. He has also played on the United States Davis Cup team, helping them win the cup in 2007.
